Living with it
My usage pattern is pretty light — once a week, maybe twice in a good week — so this bottle got touched most weekends.
The actual gluing is fast. I lay down a small bead, press the parts together, hold for a few seconds, and let go. The gel stays put on the seam instead of sliding off, which makes the difference between a clean repair and a glued-together mess. Within an hour the bond is usually strong enough to handle, but I learned early not to trust “feels strong.” I give it a full day before I treat it as load-bearing. After 24 hours, with enough glue applied, the joint is as solid as the surrounding plastic; the print itself yields first.
When I’m done, I wipe the nozzle, screw the anti-clog cap back on, and put the bottle on the shelf. I did this every time for a year. The bottle is still liquid — that genuinely surprised me, because I’d assumed CA hardens in the bottle no matter what you do. What annoyed me
Here’s the honest caveat, and it’s the only reason this isn’t an A.
Cyanoacrylate — gel or not — is unforgiving on surfaces you didn’t intend to glue. Even a no-drip gel will betray you if you over-apply and the squeeze-out falls where it shouldn’t. I have a couple of drips on my workbench right now that I cannot safely remove — scraping damages the table finish, and the solvent that attacks CA also attacks the table finish. They’re part of the table now. That’s my fault for not laying down a sacrificial sheet, not the glue’s fault, but it’s a real cost of using the product.
The second annoyance is the cured plug at the tip, plus the misleading “fast” cure. Twice over the year nothing came out when I squeezed; both times I peeled the plug off with my fingernail — carefully, because that cured plug will bond skin instantly — and the bottle worked again. The anti-clog cap prevents this most of the time, but a CA gel left long enough will cure at the tip no matter what’s on the bottle. And “fast” cure is misleading — the bond handles in seconds and holds in minutes, but doesn’t reach full strength for hours. Load it too soon and it can fail later under stress. The gel’s thicker film makes this worse than thin CA. I learned to leave prints overnight.
Who it’s for, who should skip
This tube is for hobbyist 3D printer owners who want a single adhesive on their bench and are tired of thin CA running everywhere. If you print weekly and split a project across two spools, fix a broken clip, or assemble a kit from printed parts, the gel formula and the XXL size fit the job.
Skip it if you only print occasionally (a 5 g tube will do), if you need a flexible structural bond across dissimilar materials (cured CA is rigid — reach for a two-part epoxy instead), or if you have small kids in the shop or no sacrificial surface for squeeze-out. Lay down parchment or a silicone mat first; you will thank yourself later.
Verdict
B. Eighty-three out of 100 is a B in any grading system I grew up with. The glue does what it says on the tube — bonds fast, bonds strong, lasts a year in storage — but the safety overhead is real and built into the product, not optional. If you’ve been burned by runny thin CA, the gel alone is worth the upgrade.
For the nerds
CA glue cures by anionic polymerization. The tube holds liquid cyanoacrylate monomers; the moment those monomers meet trace moisture — and there’s almost always a thin moisture film on any surface in a normal room — they start chaining into long polymers. The thinnest possible glue film, around 0.05 to 0.1 mm, cures fastest and strongest.
Viscosity grades: thin CA runs around 2–3 cPs (basically water), medium around 100 cPs (light syrup), gel 1000+ cPs (closer to honey). Gel wins for 3D printed parts because it stays put on a vertical seam by gravity alone; the same capillary action that wicks thin CA into layer lines works against you on a non-horizontal joint. The trade is set time — a thicker film takes longer to fully polymerize through, so full cure sits at the long end of the 8–24 hour window.
On filament compatibility, PLA bonds cleanly because it’s slightly porous and the gel keys into the layer lines. PETG is smoother and less reactive; a light scuff plus a full overnight cure gets you there. ABS and ASA bond well. TPU and nylon are rated by ARKA, but in practice CA on flexible filaments wants an accelerator and a very thin film — the gel’s thicker body works against you there. Heat resistance up to 110 °C means a glued part can sit in a warm car without softening; fine for hobby use, not fine near a hot end.
The tube lasted a year because the anti-clog cap went back on tight every time. CA polymerizes on contact with moisture, and the headspace inside a sealed tube is dry enough that the monomers stay liquid. The precision needle tip doubles as a seal and as a flow control; when it does clog, peeling the cured plug off (carefully — it bonds skin in seconds) restores flow.
Safety reminder: CA bonds skin in seconds. The skin bond separates on its own within hours. On fabric, finished wood, and tabletops the bond is permanent and will scar or stain. Wear nitrile gloves, drop a sacrificial cloth, and work with real airflow; the fumes are sharp.
