Anker 30W 10,000mAh Portable Charger Review: It Has the Numbers, and That Matters

The Anker 10,000mAh 30W power bank is the battery pack I reach for when I leave the house with a phone that needs to last the day. It is not perfect, but it is the one I am using, and the reason is the front-of-the-pack display: the percent charged is on the device, in triple digits, not buried in an app or hidden behind a button press. That matters more than any spec I will quote you.

Grade: A—if you want a small, fast-charge power bank with a display you can actually read.

Which Anker power bank this review covers

I bought the Anker Portable Charger, 10,000mAh 30W Power Bank, the version that ships with one USB-C cable built into the side of the pack and a second USB-C port on the top. The Amazon Special Link in this review points to that listing, ASIN B0CZ9LV3H2, white color, 10,000 mAh capacity, 30 W output.

I am not reviewing any of the other Anker batteries in the same family. There is a 5,000 mAh version, a 20,000 mAh version, a 45 W version with a retractable cable, and the smaller PowerCore Slim batteries from previous years. None of those are the pack I am reviewing. If the listing shows a different capacity, a retractable cable, or a different wattage, it is a different product and you should evaluate it on its own listing.

Everything I say is about the power bank I have and the way I carry it.

Living with it

I bought this pack to replace a smaller 5,000 mAh bank that had stopped holding a charge. The replacement criterion was simple: it had to be small enough to throw in a backpack, fast enough to charge the phone in a pinch, and it had to have the percent charged where I could see it without unlocking my phone, opening an app, or pressing a button through a hidden UI.

This bank clears all three.

It is a thin, brick-shaped slab with rounded corners. It is white, which matches the case on the device it charges, and the listing also has black, blue, and pink. White is the one I bought, and I have not had any reason to switch. There is a short USB-C cable built into the side of the pack. The cable is not very long — it is more like a tail than a cord — but it is sturdy and it stays attached. You can put the pack in a pocket or a backpack sleeve, plug the cable into the phone, and charge while you walk. You do not have to carry a separate cable for the common case.

When you unplug the cable and look at the pack itself, the front of it has a small display that shows the percent charged with three digits. You can read it across the room. You do not have to wake the pack with a button or stare at a row of four ambiguous LEDs. The display is honest. The number on the face is the number of percent of charge left in the pack.

That is the feature that made me buy this one. Every Anker and non-Anker pack I have used before had either four ambiguous LEDs, a single button to press to read out a percent, or nothing at all. The four-LED approach is a guess. The percent-on-the-front is a measurement.

There is a second USB-C port on the top of the pack. You can use that port to charge the power bank itself, or to charge a second device. The listing describes it as USB-C in and out, and that is what it does. So you have one cable that lives on the pack and charges your phone, and you have one port that takes a cable and either charges the pack from a wall charger or charges a second device, like a pair of earbuds or a tablet.

The capacity is 10,000 mAh. That is enough to charge a typical smartphone about two times from empty to full. In our household, that has covered a full day out with the phone used for navigation and music. The pack itself loses charge when sitting unused, the way all lithium packs do. After a week in a backpack, it will read 95% or so instead of the 100% it left the charger at. After a month, it will be lower. That is normal battery self-discharge, not a defect.

Charging speed is 30 W. That is fast-charging for a phone. A modern iPhone or Android flagship will pull from the pack at the highest rate the phone accepts, which on most flagship phones is 20-25 W. That means a 30-minute top-up on the pack gets a meaningful percentage back on the phone.

The pack is not heavy. It is heavier than the 5,000 mAh version it replaced, but not by much. It fits in a backpack pocket without weighing me down.

The price was $29.99 list when I bought it. That is on the lower end of what a 10,000 mAh 30 W power bank costs new from a name brand. If you wait for a sale it gets cheaper. It is not the cheapest power bank you can buy, but it is the cheapest power bank I would trust.

What I like

  • The percent-on-the-front display. Three digits, visible from across the room. I do not have to remember a row of LED meanings or press a button to read out a number. The number on the face is the number of percent of charge left. That is the feature that drove my purchase.
  • A built-in cable that is actually sturdy. The cable is short, but it is built to last, and it does not get yanked out of the pack. You can carry the pack around charged-up, plugged in, and not worry about the connection.
  • A second USB-C port on the top of the pack. I can charge the pack while the phone is plugged in. Or I can charge a second device at the same time. The port does what the listing says it does.
  • The 30 W output is fast enough to matter. It does not bottleneck a modern flagship phone. A 30-minute top-up on the pack gets a meaningful percentage back on the phone, not a token percentage.
  • The price. $29.99 list. That is on the cheaper end for a 10,000 mAh 30 W power bank from a name brand.
  • The four color options. White, black, blue, pink. Whatever your setup looks like, one of these matches.
  • It is not heavy. Threw it in a backpack pocket and forgot it was there. That is the right size for a portable battery pack.

What annoys me

  • The built-in cable is short. It is more of a tail than a cord. If you want to use the phone while it is plugged into the pack on the desk, you cannot. The pack and the phone end up next to each other.
  • You still need a separate cable to charge the pack from a wall outlet. The built-in cable is for charging devices. To charge the pack itself you need a USB-C cable into the top port. The pack does not ship with that cable, even though every power bank of this style should.
  • The pack self-discharges when unused. After a week in the backpack it is at 95%. After a month, lower. Lithium-ion cells do this. It is a feature of the chemistry, not the bank.
  • The percentage readout is a round number, not a precise reading. It will say 73% if the pack is at 73%, but the number ticks down in jumps of one, not continuously. That is good enough for the use case.
  • No pass-through charging is documented in the materials I have. I have charged my phone through the pack while charging the pack from the wall, and it worked. The pack did not advertise that explicitly. It is not a deep complaint.
  • The pack is not the smallest 10,000 mAh pack on the market. Competitors exist that are smaller, in exchange for slower charging or shorter cables. I bought this one because the percent-on-the-front was worth the extra bulk.
  • The listing says “Travel Essential Phone Power Bank” and the marketing leans into that. It is a travel power bank. It is fine. The phrase “Travel Essential” is marketing, not a feature.

Who it is for, and who should skip it

If you want a small, fast-charge power bank with a percentage display you can read at a glance, this is the right pack. The display is the reason to buy it. The 30 W output means the pack does not bottleneck a modern phone. The built-in cable means you do not have to remember to bring one. The price is reasonable. The colors are fine.

If you want the smallest, lightest 10,000 mAh pack on the market, this is not it. There are smaller packs that sacrifice the percent display or the fast charging. If that is what you care about, look at the competition.

If you want a power bank that charges a laptop over USB-C, this is not it. 30 W is not enough to run a MacBook. You need a 65 W or 100 W pack for that.

If you do not want a built-in cable, look at the Anker PowerCore with separate cables. The built-in cable is a feature for some and a wart for others.

Verdict

A small, fast, sturdy power bank with the percent charged on the front. The built-in cable is sturdy, the second USB-C port is flexible, the colors are fine. It is not perfect — the cable is short, you need a separate cable to charge the pack, and there is a marketing line about “Travel Essential.” But the percent-on-the-front makes this pack the one I reach for. That is the verdict.

Grade: A—if you want a small, fast-charge power bank with a display you can actually read. Buy the linked listing if your use case matches mine.
